The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo
Summary
Shelby got bitten by the crime-solving bug while living with her Grandpa in Cocoa Beach. Pretty soon, Shelby was so into searching for clues, that even moving to Wilton, Massachusetts with her Grandpa didn’t stop her. It wasn’t easy leaving her friends in Cocoa Beach, but Shelby jumped at the chance to tackle all new mysteries in a brand new city! Sure being a sleuth can be dangerous, but it’s all part of the job for Shelby Woo. Ok, maybe solving mysteries isn’t really her JOB—technically, she’s a police special assistant, which is an official-sounding name for a trainee. So what if she’s only 17 and keeps getting yelled at for getting involved? If mysteries kept falling into your lap, wouldn’t YOU want to solve them?
Characters
Shelby Woo: Six years ago, when 17-year-old Shelby Woo left her mom and dad in China to live with her grandpa in the United States, a super sleuth was born. Shelby loves a dark, twisted stumper of a mystery. She can’t get enough of the challenge of uncovering clues, questioning suspects, and examining evidence. But solving a mystery on her own is the ultimate reward for Shelby. Thanks to her after-school job at the Wilton Police Station (and at the police station back in Cocoa Beach before she moved), she’s helped solve some really exciting cases. No matter how tricky the case, Shelby never gives up until she’s cracked it—even though her bosses sometimes wish she would! |
Mike ‘Grandpa’ Woo: Long before Shelby moved to the United States, her grandpa worked in San Francisco as a big-time criminologist (a person who uses science to solve crimes). He still teaches criminal science at the local college, and he helped Shelby land her after-school job at the police station, but for the most part, Grandpa Woo retired from the detective business. These days, Shelby’s grandpa would rather play GOLF than solve crime. If you ask Shelby, she’ll tell you she can’t understand why anyone would waste time pounding away at a tiny ball when there are smugglers, kidnappers and other slimeballs on the loose! |
Cindi Ornette: Cindi is Shelby’s overly inquisitive friend from Cocoa Beach–she was one of the first people Shelby met after moving to the United States. Cindi has a question about everything: What was China like? What was Shelby’s family like? What’s food like in China? But Cindi’s curiosity can be a plus when it comes to solving crimes. Nothing seems to scare her either, and she’s a great photographer too. Cindi and Shelby disagree on one thing, though: Shelby isn’t happy until a mystery is solved, but Cindi always seems a little disappointed when they get to the end of a case and things go back to normal. Good thing there never seems to be a mystery shortage! |
Noah Allen: Noah is Shelby’s reluctant crime-solving pal back in Cocoa Beach. Not as passionate about the pursuit of bad guys as Shelby, Noah chips in for one reason: It gives him the chance to play roles and work in disguise. More than anything, Noah wants to be an actor, so solving mysteries means he can become tons of different characters. For Shelby, the hardest part about moving to Massachusetts was leaving Noah behind. Not only does she miss her good friend, but Noah’s sleuthing skills would sure come in handy in Wilton! |
Det. Whit Hineline: Detective Hineline made working at the police station back in Cocoa Beach really exciting. He had such puzzling cases—like the ex-astronaut who was kidnapped, and the missing dolphin from the research lab. The thing about Detective Hineline is that solving crimes really stresses him out. He was always yelling at Shelby to butt out or keep quiet when he was questioning a witness, but Shelby didn’t mind. She figured he probably just needed a little more sleep. Deep down, Detective Hineline is really a decent guy–who just can’t help yelling all the time. After all, Shelby wouldn’t miss him if he was completely mean, right? |
Vince Rosania: Shelby met Vince at the school auto shop, where he takes classes, and rumor has it she thinks he’s pretty cute. Vince wants to be a car mechanic, and his technical talents come in handy on the crime solving scene. He’s also sweet, smart, and he’s got a car. Not that Shelby would ever like someone just because he had a car, but it doesn’t hurt his chances. But the best thing about Vince is that he can admit he’s not right all the time. Shelby’s grandpa thinks it’s a lesson she could stand to learn—but she’s pretty sure he’s wrong. |
Angie Burns: 17-year-old Angie is Shelby’s newest friend in Wilton. Angie is 17, loves science, and she’s crazy about the Boston Red Sox. But she’s still not sure about getting involved with Shelby’s sleuthing. Angie is practically Shelby’s polar opposite. According to Shelby’s grandpa, Shelby’s heart rushes into things before her head can catch up while Angie likes to think things out logically before making any moves. So Shelby gets Angie to take chances, and Angie keeps Shelby from going off the deep end–most of the time… |
Det. Sharon Delancey: In Wilton, Shelby works with Detective Delancey, just like she worked with Detective Hineline back in Cocoa Beach. It’s pretty much the same arrangement, except that Detective Delancey doesn’t yell nearly as much. In fact, she even invites Shelby to help out sometimes, though she usually pulls her back just when things are getting juicy. Working with a smart, tough, female detective can be inspiring–and sometimes Shelby gets the feeling back when she was 17, Detective Delancey was pretty inquisitive herself. |
