As Told By Ginger

The TV cartoon follows a preteen girl named Ginger Foutley, along with two friends, as they try to fit in social life as well in school and try to avoid any embarrassments.

Characters

Ginger: A sixth-grader who suddenly finds herself in the scary-but-exciting new realm of junior high, Ginger Foutley is a regular kid—although maybe a bit more reflective than most—who’s still trying to figure out who she is.The social structure of Lucky Junior High grosses her out, but she’s also kind of obsessed with it. If she were part of the cool clique, she swears she would do things differently. Yet her bluff is called when Courtney, a princess of cool, decides Ginger can hang. With one foot in each crowd, Ginger constantly flip-flops between her loyalty to her old friends and her desire to be cool with a capital C… Welcome to junior high!

Macie: Allergy-prone Macie breathes out of one nostril, is riddled with neuroses and wears a constant look of panic. Any sort of change alarms Macie, who has been wearing her hair the same way since third grade. She’s so self-conscious that even if she doesn’t know what anyone is laughing about, she assumes she’s the target anyway. Macie relies on her friends Ginger and Dodie to explain junior high-type things, and often convulses with nerves as they discuss anything the least bit intimidating—like the elimination of Jell-0 from the school cafeteria.

Dodie: Chatterbox and gossip maven Dodie is Ginger’s longtime best friend. Her constant bulletins and updates keep Ginger current—once the recycled info is deciphered and checked against what ACTUALLY happened. Dodie knows the name and vitals of every student at Lucky Junior High, as well as the exact shade of lipstick each girl wears and why it does or doesn’t work for her. Dodie wants to be popular more than anything, and it shows so much that she probably won’t get her wish…

Darren: Easy-going, agreeable Darren got his cool like a hand-me-down sweater: His older brother Will is an extremely popular high school student. And Darren himself is one of those rarest of rare animals: a down-to-earth, self-confident 12-year-old. Ginger values Darren’s delivery of highly-coveted inside info from the cool world, but alas, his popularity has been sabotaged temporarily by a massive metal structure attached to his face. The horror of braces and headgear has befallen him.

Courtney: Totally self-absorbed and opportunistic, Courtney takes her position as Most Popular Girl very seriously. She prides herself on the diplomatic control and manipulation of her classmates. She’s intrigued and baffled, however, by Ginger’s backbone and real friendships. So she sets out to pluck the “unknown” from the dregs of everyday life and make her a Popular Girl. Thus, Ginger becomes the latest experiment in Courtney’s puppet show. It sometimes seems as if the spoiled, wealthy Courtney—who, among other notable achievements, is light years ahead of her peers in makeup application skills—was born into her role. You almost can’t blame her for being so inconsiderate and selfish…almost…

Miranda: Cold, calculating Miranda is Courtney’s right hand, and this pre-teen beauty goes green with jealousy whenever “the Foutley girl” is around. She loves to keep Ginger constantly off-balance, scheming to undermine her socially—she’s always whispering some horrible rumor or another in her ear—and smiling widely all the while.

Carl: A 9-year-old fascinated with all things icky, Carl is the only man of the Foutley house. He thrives on adults’ disgust and pouts when he can’t gross someone out. Carl thinks of himself as being way ahead of his years and is particularly proud of his power to disturb grown-ups. His best friend is Hoodsey Bishop, who, as a partner in crime, is kind of a work in progress.

Hoodsy: Dodie’s little brother and Carl’s sidekick, hapless Hoodsey would be perfectly content to sit and watch TV or play with action figures all day. But Carl gets him out into the world—and often into a world of trouble. He’ll usually puff himself up enough to play Carl’s right-hand man, but sometimes he pipes in as the voice of reason against his pal’s outrageous schemes.

Lois: A hard-working nurse and single mom, Lois often gets stuck with the graveyard shift at Sheltered Shrubs Hospital. But no matter how tired she is, she’ll still be the first to arrive at parents’ night at school. Ginger and Carl know they come first with her, even if her way of showing it might be considered “tough love.” She doesn’t have time to mince words, so she tends to say stuff… well… bluntly…

Blake: Blake is Courtney’s little brother and is a total super-brain, which doesn’t always make him popular with the other kids.
