Rocko’s Modern Life

Characters

Rocko: Rocko comes from Australia, as his accent would indicate. Out on his own for the first time, he’s bound to make a few mistakes. And Rocko’s made plenty. Some might say his first big mistake was choosing to pal around with his friend Heffer. Other folks’ opinions aside, Rocko does the best he can. He just gets overwhelmed with modern life from time to time. Well, actually, life overwhelms Rocko just about every day. But Rocko is one determined wallaby, and he shows incredible courage, whether it’s facing dangerous machinery like vacuum cleaners, taking care of his brainless dog Spunky, or watching out for his dimwitted buddy Heffer.

Rocko’s courage is a testament to the human, er, WALLABY spirit.Rocko is a male wallaby living on his own for the first time. Approximately 20 year of age, and just finding his independence, he can sometimes be very confident and sometimes very insecure. Overall, he is optimistic and friendly with a sensitive character and high morals. However, sometimes the anxiety and frustration of modern life are too much for him. When this happens, he can lose control. He may mutter to himself or in extreme cases, let out a high pitched scream. Often, he is embarrassed by these sudden outbursts and will follow them with a sheepish giggle.

It is also important to know that though Rocko is generally very polite and sometimes shy, he can become very determined and forceful when provoked.

Heffer: Heffer is the nicest guy you’d ever want to throw out of your house. Rocko was once ready to do just that, in fact. Heffer’s a slob. He eats too much. He’s fat. The fact that he’s not afraid of anything is more a matter of stupidity than a matter of bravery.

Heffer, though, is a devoted friend. And he loves life. It’s important to know folks like Hef, especially when you’re as stressed-out as Rocko. So what if Heffer may sometimes eat you out of house and home? So what if he’s messy? So what if he like to prance around naked? We’ve all got our quirks. Heffer’s the kind of steer who’ll stick with you through thick and thin.Heffer is Rocko’s best friend. In contrast to Rocko’s conscientious nature, Heffer is an overgrown slob. He eats too much, he talks too much and generally gets in the way. But for all these faults, Heffer is good-natured and funny, he is also a loyal friend. Unfortunately, it’s usually when Heffer’s trying to do someone a favor that the trouble starts. His voice should come across as young (early 20’s), friendly, laid back and not too intelligent. He can be easily excited and easily disappointed.

Ed Bighead: Ed’s a cane toad with a grumpy disposition. It’s not that he’s a bad guy or anything - even if he can’t stand the sight of Rocko or his friends. He’s just got a lot on his mind. As one of the many workers at the world famous Conglomo corporation, he’s a businessman, or should that be businesstoad, under heaps of executive stress. At least he has a wife who loves him. Which is just enough to keep him sane while the modern world around him does its best to drive him wild. After all, if you’d spent hours planting salmon bushes in your back garden, it’d annoy you too if Spunky came along and started eating them. We bet you couldn’t keep your cool either - and neither could Ed. Ed’s like all of us. If we were toads, that is.

Bev Bighead: As the long-suffering wife of Ed Bighead, Bev has a lot on her mind. Bev has a busy home to keep running, as well as putting up with Ed’s moods and mad rants.Unlike Ed, Bev gets on quite well with Rocko and his chums - once or twice she’s even had Rocko over to visit. Of course when Ed got back early and found Rocko with no clothes on, he was naturally worried, but there was a perfectly reasonable explanation, and it only made Ed realise all the more just how much he loves Bev.

A role model for female home-makers everywhere - well, if they happen to be toads living in a mad world like O-Town, anyway. Perhaps we’d better just settle on describing Bev as “unique”. There’s nobody else like her.

Filburt: Filburt is a nerdy, neurotic turtle who usually works behind a counter. Even though he’s a basket case now, he wasn’t always that way. Filburt used to be a genius, a star athlete and a babe magnet. But a serious case of unrequited love sent him to the nut house for a while. Now he’s back, but he’s counting change for a living.Filburt is also best friends with Rocko and Heffer and also in his early 20’s. He is a neurotic, nerdy hypochondriac constantly talking about his most recent ailment. He and Heffer often bicker with each other for Rocko’s attention. His voice is shaky and breathy without sounding feminine. He is shy and timid but can quickly become irritated particularly at Heffer. Think of Woody Allen when you think of Filburt.

Spunky: Spunky, Rocko’s faithful mutt, isn’t exactly a wonder dog. He smells. He eats garbage. He drinks his own saliva. He also rolls around in Ed Bighead’s salmon bushes. Ed hates that.To his credit, Spunky is a loving, loyal pet. And if he’s kind of dumb, so be it. You’d be dumb, too, if someone dropped a TV set on YOUR head.
