Just For Kicks
Summary
Alexa, Freddie, Lauren and Vida wouldn’t normally hang out together. In fact, they probably wouldn’t even cross paths if it weren’t for one thing they all have in common: Their love of soccer. Suprising everyone, especially themselves, these four very different teens become friends after making it onto the Power Strikers, a premiere girls soccer team in New York City. On the field, the superskilled Strikers are united in the determination to win, and all of their differences seem to melt away. Off the field the girls are still tight, but their diverse backgrounds sometimes make understanding each other even tougher than Coach Moore’s practice drills!
Characters
Lauren Zelmer: Lauren is totally talented and totally overscheduled. She’s an accomplished violinist, a dancer and can speak several languages. Oh, and she’s steller at soccer, too. Lauren lives with her overprotective mom who just wants the best for her, even if it means stifling Lauren’s social life until she’s safely into college. Lauren has a slew of insecurities about her body and boys (she’s got a super-sized crush on Alexa’s brother Chris), and the one place she can really be herself is on the soccer field. Little does she know that her new friends - and maybe even a new boy - are about to give her the confidence boost she doesn’t even realize she needs. |
Winifred “Freddie” Costello: Freddie’s a tomboy and not exactly the most popular girl at school. She’s also a bit of a klutz and has a tendency to talk a little too much. Freddie also loves to skateboard… and of course, to play soccer. Freddie lives in NYC with her grandmother Lucy who keeps a close watch over her while her dad serves overseas in the military. She goes to the same private school as her teammate Alexa, but the girls hang out with very different crowds. But what Freddie lacks in social skills, she makes up for on the soccer field. And once she gets over Alex’s popularity - and her own insecurities - she learns that like soccer, finding true friendship is a team effort. |
Vida Atwood: Vida is a natural born leader. She’s a rebel with an attitude and she’s not afraid to tell it like it is. Vida lives in Queens with her mom, dad, big sis Elise (who just happens to be a model) and little bro, Ty. Super tall, Vida’s sometimes insecure about her exceptional height. But when it comes to fashion, she’s got extreme confidence - she’d rather design one of her original creations than shop at the most chi-chi boutique. The only thing Vida loves more than designing is soccer. Soccer is Vida’s “thing.” She excels on the field and is always on hand to give her pals moral support… and the occasional pair of soccer cleats. |
Alexa D’Amico: Alexa’s a popular cheerleader who gets a lot of heat from her friends when she tries out for the Power Strikers. Although she seems totally together, inside Alex’s conflicted - about her friends on the field and her friends at school, about her cheerleading past and her soccer-star future. Alexa knows she belongs on the soccer field. But does that mean she has to give up her other passions too? One of Alexa’s biggest fans is her older brother Chris, who’s always in the stands to watch his sis play. With her talent and drive, her new friends on the field, something tells us Alexa won’t be wondering where she belongs for long… |
Chris D’Amico: Chris is Alexa’s older brother. He’s protective of her, but they’re really more like good friends. Chris is cute, funny, and a little too charming around some of Alexa’s friends. Lauren has a major crush on him, but there’s a slight problem: Chris is totally preoccupied with his girlfriend Desiree. |
